Developed by the team responsible for Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion for Game Boy Advance continues the side-scrolling mix of action and exploration first introduced in 1987 on the 8-bit NES. As Samus Aran, a female soldier encased entirely in gadget-equipped armor, players must journey to a mysterious planet to investigate an abandoned research lab populated by hostile alien species. Samus' redesigned suit of armor can fire missiles, perform speed dashes, and morph into a ball so she can drop bombs to reveal new areas. Samus can also learn new moves, many of which are hidden or acquired after defeating bosses, including the ability to climb walls, grab ledges, and move hand-over-hand by gripping the ceiling. In a departure from previous games in the series, Metroid Fusion has enemies inhabited by parasitic power-ups. Shooting an alien releases a flying power-up that can be caught for extra health or additional missiles. If a power-up evades capture, it will seek to reunite with the fallen host and bring it back to life. Or, it may go off in search of another life form to inhabit. |
