The top-secret electromagnetic satellite known as GoldenEye has fallen into enemy hands. It is believed the Janus Syndicate, an international terrorist organization headquartered in St. Petersburg, Russia, has stolen the key to the device, which could render the world completely powerless. Your mission, James, is to infiltrate the organization, find out precisely who is responsible and prevent the satellite from being activated. Key contacts who may be of help are Natalya Simonova, a Russian computer programmer who was the lone survivor in the theft of the GoldenEye key, and your friend Alec Trevelyan, Agent 006. Your enemies include Janus, the unidentified leader of the Janus Syndicate, Xenia Onatopp, a malicious killer and expert pilot, General Akady Ourumov and Boris Grishenko, the programmer who may have armed the satellite. Rare's third game on the system is a first-person shooter that closely follows the storyline of 1995's GoldenEye, the film marking the debut of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, a world-renowned agent with a license to kill. The game is broken down into a series of eighteen missions, each with multiple objectives, from powering-down a communications dish in Severnaya to photographing maps with your microcamera. In between objectives you'll have to deal with swarms of enemy guards, each behaving in a realistic manner, from patroling certain areas to standing guard in front of doors. The game also features 19 different weapons, including a Walther PPK (with silencer) and a sniper rifle that lets you zoom in on targets from far away! Also available are grenade and rocket launchers, three types of mines (remote, proximity and timed) as well as throwing knives. Since enemies are made up of polygons, your aim is important. Hit a soldier in the leg and he can still sound an alarm or return shots; hit him in the head, and he will be a threat no longer. A red crosshair target helps pinpoint shots so you can go about your business drawing as little attention as possible. In order to help you with the different objectives, Q has supplied your character with an array of nifty gadgets. These include a covert modem, watch laser, microcamera, bomb defuser, door decoder, key analyzer, watch magnet and plastique -- all the toys an agent needs to play with while trying to save the world from imminent disaster. After fulfilling your duties as member of Her Majesty's Secret Service, the one-player game is not over. A new difficulty level will open up, offering completely new objectives on top of your previous ones. The enemy soldiers will also become harder to defeat! The game offers a total of three difficulty levels (Agent, Secret Agent and OO Agent) designed to maximize replay value. Yet once players have their fill of the one-player game, they can grab up to three friends and participate in the multi-player mode! Eight scenarios offer different styles of play, from the standard deathmatch (Normal) to themed events such as You Only Live Twice, where each player is given two lives to see who can remain the last one standing. In The Living Daylights, players take turns holding a flag (the person who avoids death the longest is the winner); The Man With the Golden Gun has each player searching for the golden pistol that can bring down a player in one shot; "Licensed to Kill" makes every shot fatal; and three team battles let you challenge the opposition (two-on-two, three-on-one and two-on-one). Players can also customize the multi-player game's length (timed or first one to a certain number of points), arena, weapons and each character's health level. |
