Description
One of the most popular and beloved games of all time, The Legend of Zelda combined the exploration of Atari's Adventure with the hack-and-slash action of Gauntlet, while adding innovative elements all its own. As the epic game begins, the evil Ganon has kidnapped Princess Zelda and scattered the eight pieces of the Triforce throughout the land of Hyrule. Only a young hero named Link can return peace and order to the kingdom. Armed with a small sword and shield, he sets out to explore a world filled with monsters and puzzling secrets. The land of Hyrule is divided into the overworld and the underworld. The overworld consists of 128 interconnected screens and is where Link will do most of his exploring. The entrances to the nine underworld mazes are located throughout the overworld. The pieces of the Triforce are hidden in the first eight of these mazes, and Ganon lurks in the ninth. Although the game contains only rudimentary role-playing elements, it paved the way for more complex action RPGs such as The Secret of Mana. The game was also the first cartridge to use battery-backed memory to save a player's progress.
